Shoe Safety for Summer: Opt to Protect Your Feet
Walking barefoot in the grass or sand is common in the summer months, but this can create foot problems. Leaving the house in the summer without the proper type of footwear can put your feet at risk of injury. It is important to always wear shoes to protect your feet, especially if you plan to be active. Walking barefoot can put you at risk for injuries, burns, and scrapes that may negatively impact your feet.
What to Wear on Your Feet During the Summer
- Flip flops. Flip flops are a good option to wear at a public pool or locker room to prevent injuries or infections. However, they are not the best choice to wear during an outing because they provide little protection, no support, and may actually be damaging your feet.
- Sandals. Sandals are a popular choice for summer footwear and come in endless styles. If you are planning to wear sandals, choose a pair that provides support and have straps that can secure your feet.
- Water shoes. Water shoes are an ideal choice for the beach or pool. They can protect your feet from objects such as shells or rocks and give you traction on slippery surfaces.

- Wear sunscreen. Sunscreen is important if you’re going to be out in the sun, but don’t forget to apply it to your feet. Just like other parts of your body, the tops of your feet and ankles can easily burn. Don’t forget to reapply after going into the water.
- Moisturize. Keep your feet looking their best by applying a daily moisturizer. If you’re diabetic, avoid moisturizing between your toes, and pay close attention to spots that need extra hydration such as your heels.
- Check your feet. If you’re diabetic, performing a daily self-check of your feet is a must, especially in summer. You want to check your feet for any signs of a problem such as blisters, sores, or ingrown toenails. Contact a podiatrist at the first sign of a problem before it gets worse and turns into a serious complication.
